“I took up Nursing because I know I can be a better doctor because I understand the dynamics of both professions,” said Cynthia Oluchi Nworgu, Far Eastern University (FEU) nursing student, named one of the Three Outstanding International Students by Philippine International Friendship and Understanding Association, Inc. (PIFUA).

Nworgu, a senior student nurse, started her mark within the Institute of Nursing when she earned a “Student Achiever” honor in her sophomore year.
Just like any ‘international student’, Nworgu said she had a hard time expressing herself because of the language barrier between her and some professors. She hated having “special treatments” because she doesn’t want to learn the other way, but to learn the way regular students go through.
Despite the language difference, added Cynthia, “I still feel at home in FEU because the university has a nurturing environment. The Filipinos are very accommodating and are good listeners.“
Nworgu, who hails from Nigeria, showed resiliency and independence, earning her recommendations from her professors and their department. “Nworgu is hardworking, a fast learner, and active in class discussions, shared Leonardo P. de Guzman, section coordinator and adviser of Nworgu’s class. In fact, he added, during exposure in the clinical area, she would show compassion to clients, empathy and honesty in caring for her patients”.
These traits are what endeared her to Joeven Castro, FEU Student Development director. “I saw the potential in her and thought she can win the competition. You can sense her sincerity and the depth of her thoughts,” said Castro.
“I prayed first” said Nworgu when asked how she prepared for the competition. Apart from praying, Nworgu also studied everything about the Philippines by reading books and articles on history and current issues. She also received help from Castro in terms of speech presentation and interview strategies
.
Nworgu, who bested 12 other international students, admitted that during the competition, she was “over prepared”. For her talent showcase, she performed a traditional 5-minute Nigerian dance. The future doctor said she felt her extemporaneous speech on happiness helped her win.
Dr. Ma. Belinda G. Buenafe, Institute of Nursing Dean, expressed her happiness over Cynthia’s award. She thanked Nworgu for exemplifying the FEU core values fortitude excellence and uprightness in this competition.
PIFUA is an organization which seeks to introduce foreign students to every aspect of Filipino life and culture, as well as to expose Filipinos to the life and culture of foreign students. - FEU
