Deported for working at Walmart Nigerian students, return to Canada

Victoria Ordu and Favour Amadi arrive back in Canada at Regina International Airport on June 7, 2014.

Favour Amadi and Victoria Ordu left their homes in Nigeria in 2009 to build better futures.

They traveled, both on scholarships, to study at the University of Regina in Canada. In 2011, the women took part-time jobs at a local Walmart to help with their expenses.

And that's when everything changed.

They found out the hard way that working was a violation of their student visas. They were only allowed to work on campus.

The Canadian government issued deportation orders, so in 2012, the women sought sanctuary at a local church. After 486 days in sanctuary, the women gave up their fight to stay and were deported back to Nigeria.

But that's not the end of the story.

Students and faculty at the University of Regina lobbied the Canadian government to allow the two women to return to Regina to complete their studies.

"These were two young women who worked at Walmart for two weeks," said Michelle Stewart, an assistant professor at the University of Regina. "They thought that they were allowed to work on- and off-campus. It was a mistake. It was a violation of the terms of their visa. But the punishment needed to fit the crime, and I think that was the biggest concern we had."

Stewart has supported Amadi and Ordu's efforts to return to Regina and she helped create a legal defense fund for international students.

"They decided to take a stand and fight their deportation by going into sanctuary for 15 months, which raised a lot of questions at the local and regional level about injustices within the immigration process," she said. "So, although Victoria and Favour did have to return to Nigeria, and that’s when they went through the regular immigration process to reapply to return to the country, since that time, immigration laws have changed."

The Canadian government has changed its policy and international students with study permits are now allowed to work off-campus.

"It's still like a dream to me, you know. It still hasn't set in yet. We're very, very happy to be back here to complete our education," Amadi said after arriving at Regina International Airport on Saturday.

President of LASU Union Insists On Paying N46, 500 Tuition

lasu

The President, Lagos State University Student Union, Nurudeen Yusuf, has questioned the move by the state to increase the tuition.

He insisted that the government and authorities should revert to the agreement made by the student on April 7, 2014 to pay 46,500 Naira as tuition.

He stated that the school is a State University not a Private University and therefore should be made affordable for the common man.

The government had said that its intention was to improve on the standard of the university, but Mr Yusuf disagreed, stressing that “making the university a more standard university does not go in line with increasing the tuition”.

Mr Yusuf who was a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, on Wednesday urged the State government to increase its commitment towards the school by funding it adequately.

“The State government should fund the university adequately so that education will be made available to the people, so that the aim of the establishment of LASU will not be defeated,” the student union president stated.

He noted that the reasons behind the hike in fees should be explained by the government, and also criticised the recent move for students to pay for teaching practice and other fees that the student were not meant to pay.

He complained about the school laboratory, stating that for over three years of increase in tuition fee, the school’s laboratories are without chemical, classes are without windows which is preventing the students from having quantitative and qualitative education.

He added that certain things should have been put in place before increasing the fees. He listed some of the areas needing attention to include improved standard of education and up-to-date infrastructures for teaching amongst others, urging the government to pay special attention to education like other developed countries.

24-year-old Emerges Best Graduating PhD Student At UNILAG

unilag

A 24-year-old student, Hallowed Oluwadara yesterday emerged the best graduating PhD student in the Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos, which describes him as one of the youngest Nigerians to attain such feat.

The graduand, who instantly became the cynosure of all eyes, thanked the general overseer of Deeper Life Ministry, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, saying he had benefitted from the scholarship of the church, and that the scholarship also facilitated his return to Nigeria, and the choice of UNILAG as a place to study.

While also dedicating his achievement to God Almighty, he thanked his parents and many other individuals and organisations, especially the church, which he said made his academic journey a smooth one particularly with the provision of fund.

He said: “I did not have cause to work because I was sponsored by the church and I lacked nothing which made my concentration much easier. This award particularly is a victory for the field of Mathematics especially as many people do not believe it is a field that could transform the world.

“I hope in the nearest future, I can achieve the goal of securing another PhD in Physics since my other degrees had always been in the two fields.”

Oluwadara, whose father is a clergyman in the Central African Republic, had earlier completed two first degree programmes in Mathematics and Physics and two Master’s degree programmes in the same fields before returning to Nigeria to pursue his PhD.

In a similar development, 21-year-old Bakare Oluwafemi Abubakar of the Department of Electrical and Electronics, Faculty of Engineering, emerged this year’s UNILAG Best Graduating Student with a cumulative gradient point of 4.86.

..: About DORA
 (Culled from doraakunyilionline.org)

Prof. Dora Nkem Akunyili (OFR) was born in Makurdi, Benue State (Nigeria) on the 14th of July 1954 to Chief & Mrs Paul Young Edemobi. She is a devout Catholic and is happily married to Dr. J.C. Akunyili, a Medical Practitioner and they are blessed with six children and three grandchildren. Her hobbies include reading, writing, cooking and travelling. She speaks Igbo and English fluently.

Prof. Akunyili, is an internationally renowned Pharmacist, Pharmacologist, Erudite Scholar, Seasoned Administrator, and a visionary leader.

It is remarkable that throughout her high school career, Dora Akunyili was always top of her class - a record that has never been broken in the school to date.

She got her B.Pharm (Hons) in 1978 and PhD in 1985, both at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). Prof. Akunyili won the best student award in the school of Pharmacy in her very first year in the school and the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate and Research Leadership prize in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for 1984/85 and 1985/86 academic Sessions.

She was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pharmacology in October, 2000 by the same University.

In 1981, she ventured into Academics as a Graduate Assistant (Research Fellow) in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UNN. In the University system, she made a steady progress from lecturer I in 1986 until she was made Senior Lecturer in 1990.

Prior to her appointment, food and drug regulation in Nigeria was chaotic. All manner of adulterated, fake and substandard food and drugs were dumped into Nigeria resulting in over 60 percent of fake drugs in circulation. Unscrupulous individuals made fortunes from such unwholesome practices. When she assumed office, she brought in a new culture of excellence and honesty to NAFDAC and the entire Nigerian public service. As a result, the level of fake and counterfeit drugs in circulation dropped to 16.7 percent with vast improvement in the food and other regulated sectors. As a commentator in a national newspaper once wrote, “The NAFDAC Director General is a revolutionary. She has not only changed NAFDAC, she has also changed the pharmaceutical industry in the country.”

From December 2008 – December 2010, she worked as the Honourable Minister of Information and Communications, Federal Republic of Nigeria. As the Honourable Minister, Prof. Akunyili anchored the Re-branding Nigeria Project driven by the slogan, Nigeria Good People, Great Nation. The programme was conceived as an internal process to address Nigeria’s negative image both at home and abroad. Dora has proved her versatility in all areas of human endeavour as she also ventured into politics when she aspired to serve her own people in Anambra State as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Apple Buys Beat By Dre for 3 billion Dollars

Apple has bought headphone maker Beats Electronics for $3bn (£1.8bn) in a deal that ranks as the iPhone giant’s largest ever.
The agreement sees Apple snap up Beats’ music streaming service and audio equipment arm. Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine, a music producer, and rapper Dr Dre will join Apple, as part of the deal, which comprises $2.6bn in cash and around $400m in Apple shares.

The transaction is due to close by the end of September.

“Music is such an important part of all of our lives and holds a special place within our hearts at Apple,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive. “That’s why we have kept investing in music and are bringing together these extraordinary teams so we can continue to create the most innovative music products and services in the world.
Mr Iovine added: “I’ve always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple. The idea when we started the company was inspired by Apple’s unmatched ability to marry culture and technology. Apple’s deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special.”

This image, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and rapper Dr Dre, centre, was released after the deal was announced
Buying Beats, which was founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and rapper Dr Dre in 2008, marks a significant shift in strategy by Mr Cook.
His predecessor, Steve Jobs, famously transformed the music industry when he released iTunes and the iPod a decade ago. However, these have since waned in popularity.
Acquiring Beats’ music streaming service gives Apple, which runs the iTunes Radio service, extra firepower in its fight with rivals Spotify and Pandora.
Beats Music, as it is known, is a paid-for subscription service similar to Spotify, so allows Apple to continue operating iTunes Radio, which is free.
“Music is such an important part of Apple’s DNA and always will be,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice-president of internet software and services. “The addition of Beats will make our music lineup even better, from free streaming with iTunes Radio to a world-class subscription service in Beats, and of course buying music from the iTunes Store as customers have loved to do for years.”
Beats tweeted this picture shortly after the Apple deal was announced
Meanwhile, Apple will team up its own modestly-priced headphones business with Beats’ high-end range. Beats controls 27pc of the $1.8bn headphone market and 57pc of the market for “premium” versions, despite its products selling for hundreds of pounds each. It also reaches consumers through partnerships with Chrysler, Hewlett Packard and HTC.
Wednesday's multi-billion-dollar deal dwarfs the $404m Apple spent in 1996 to buy computer company NeXT, which ranks as its biggest to date. It is also be a substantial increase to the $1bn Beats was valued at just eight months ago, when asset management firm Carlyle Group took a minority stake for $500m.
Earlier this year Tim Cook said that Apple, which is sitting on a $133bn cash pile, was not against agreeing deals for large sums of money.
“We have no problem spending 10 figures for the right company, for the right fit that’s in the best interest of Apple in the long-term. None. Zero,” he said.
