10 things a 100 level student (fresher) should know

1.       STUDYING IS A MUST -Well if you want to be an “A” student and don’t think anything in some way you studied in secondary (high school). You‘ll spend more hours there and always use the power of study groups.

2.       STUDY IN GROUPS - yes, take some time off to study on your own, but this is the university/college dearie, make intelligent friends and don’t be shy/ashamed to ask for help from others who may know better than you in that course. Don’t go having clicks that don’t add value to you as a person.

3.       TOLERANCE -Your now in a much bigger field of play, way bigger than your secondary school environment (where you knew everyone‘s dad and mom and you may even had come from similar places). The college has a larger scope of people, from different ethnic and religious backgrounds and think about it, (they all think they are special, just as you think you are!!!). My point, see the best in everyone and ask for their help when you need them. Don’t let ethnic and religious sentiments stop you from bagging an “A” in that course.

4.       UNDERSTAND THE CREDIT UNIT SYSTEM -It will help you make the right choices when picking courses. You don’t have to carry every course that’s thrown at you. Don’t just follow the crowd. Understand your capacity as an individual and pick courses carefully and Ace them. “It’s better to have an extra year you planned for, than one you didn’t plan for”. Remember don’t be the one who writes the test s, practical’s, exams, assignment just because your friends, family or relatives advised you to. Make the right choices for yourself because you will be the one facing the exams alone in that exam hall.

5.       LEARN HOW TO CALCUATE YOUR CGPA - Very important! It’s a system run by man, so mistakes are inevitable. Learn how to calculate your CGPA and please print out your result immediately, it’s your right.

6.       DON’T JOIN EVERY ASSOCIATION - Okay you joined creative writers club, dance club, unity against Aids club, karate club, air force boys association, chess club, Ebola action group, swimming club, not to mention the religious and departmental association and meetings. Pick only 2, or 3 at most if you are a sportsman:
1 – for Spiritual edification 2 – to improve your talents and gifts3 – for Sports and stick to them.
Too many activities will drain you of energy and will hamper your effectiveness in your study which is the reason mom/dad/uncle/aunty are paying your fees.

7.       LIVING ON CAMPUS-if your school has hostels inside campus, then I advise you to stay  in there for the first year of your college life. It’ll keep you in academic shape. And helps you fully understand the system better. The drive you get from seeing student going to class in the evenings and night to read will drive you to study and attend classes.

8.       THE POWER OF ATTENDANCE, TESTS, ASSIGNMENT AND PRACTICAL SCORES –
Don’t joke with these things, they may seem trivial but they end up becoming the rescuers when exams go sour. My point is, put in every atom of focus and energy in preparation for tests, assignment, practicals and attendance as you would have for your final exams. A  10 or 5 markfs  may be the difference between and “A” or “B” / “B” or “C”

9.   RELATIONSHIPS ON CAMPUS - I have a full article dedicated to this but since this is for 100 levels (fresher), my advice is LEAVE IT ALONE!!! You have a major job of first developing a solid GPA in your 1st year. Don’t stat introducing unnecessary distractions into your life.
To read the full article on relationships in the university, click here
10.  THERE IS AN END ONE DAY- Don’t live in the university/college like the next 4-5 years will last forever. Those who you come in contact with will eventually graduate, get married, build successful carriers and have kids. Ensure you use those years on campus to build and improve yourself and make the right contacts. Remember in the next 5 years a new generation will be on that campus. Do what you have to do now and MOVE ON!!!

12 FOOTBALL RULES WHEN WE WERE KIDS

1. The fat kid was the goalkeeper... ALWAYS!

2. The owner of the ball decides who plays.

3. Penalties were awarded only if the injured player curses a lot.

4. The match only ended when everyone was tired.

5. No matter how many goals you score, the winner will be determined by the last team to score.

6. No referee. No lines men. You could run with the ball even behind the goal post. No one cared.

7. If you don't participate in repairing the ball you were given a 10-match ban.

8. If you're picked last, you're a loser Man!!!

9. The guy who was never chosen during selection had the job of fetching the ball from the tree when it got stuck, under the car or in muddy water. Only then could he be permitted to play the next game.

10. When the owner of the ball gets annoyed, GAME OVER! STRAIGHT UP!!!

11. You were allowed to change a goalkeeper in case of a penalty.

12. The most skillful player would get automatic selection & can switch sides at will.

3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GRADUATE (ESPECIALLY FROM A NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY)

§  There is a big difference between schooling and education:
A lot of people assume that both terms are interchangeable. All around the world, and especially in Nigeria, your venture into an educational institution accounts for a schooling; you are trained in a relatively closed range of subjects, and you are expected to utilise this information in the wider world.
In truth, you’re going to need much more than that. An education imparts, not just knowledge, but skills and judgement as well. This is imparted without recourse necessarily to a formal school environment. Ninety per cent of the knowledge I have acquired in my life were completely independent of anything I got in any school. There are in fact advantages to learning away from the academic environment. The horizons are broader, the didactic experience is richer and the lessons are more easily applicable to real-life situations.
Very little of the technical detail you are taught in school will be actively useful on the outside, but an education will help you define what portion is needful. The sooner you realise this, the better.

§  Your certificate is beautiful, but it is a ceremonial document:   So you slaved away, burning a candle at both ends, guzzling coffee and other stimulants, and you scraped a First Class degree by the skin of your teeth.
Brilliant. It is testament to your focus and willpower. It is not, however, a metric of your intelligence or wits. The ability to think on your feet and solve problems creatively are what stand out an employee in the workplace. You will not always have the luxury of an exam time table to prepare in advance, or the benefit of swotting overnight.
This brings us again to the first point, about schooling and education. Schooling may drill the knowledge in, but education gives latitude for self-expression and spontaneity. It is not helpful to the employer that you need to refresh your memory on your third year course notes before proffering a solution at a crisis meeting.

§  It’s all about people skills:          When it comes to succeeding in the workplace, you will need a lot more than an aptitude for memorizing things. We talked earlier about the ability to think on your feet. Allied to that, as with all things involving other people in any kind of organized structure, is the ability to get to grips with politics.
Yes, politics. The biggest compliment I have ever received from my editor at work is when, after a long session recording, he said to me, “Have you ever considered being a diplomat?”
The ability to soothe egos is priceless. Every human being strives for advancement, but you must learn to balance self-promotion with work relations. A scenario whereby your work begins to make an immediate superior look bad before his superiors will only breed animosity and envy. When the shit starts to fly (pardon my French), you need not look for “village people” on your case, a little diplomacy would have saved you the aggravation.

Missy Elliott loses 60 pounds

View image on Twitter

Missy Elliott is a "smooth chick."

The 43-year-old rapper revealed a trim new physique on Thursday when she posted a Twitpic of herself following a performance.

Elliott, who was posing with her hands on her sleek waist, looked better than ever in the snap, clad in a pair of form-fitting jeans, a Nike sweatshirt, and a baseball cap that aptly read "You can't workout with us."

The Virginia-bred artist was on tap alongside Solange Knowles to perform at the Alexander Wang and H&M afterparty in New York City on Thursday. For her performance, she donned similar attire, but swapped her jeans for a pair of black leather pants.

Elliott hasn't officially confirmed how much weight she's lost, but her Twitter fans certainly noticed. Several commented that the "Crazy Girl" crooner "is aging backwards" and "looks better than ever."

The Grammy Award winner's weight loss could be a result of her recent health battles. Elliott revealed in 2011 that she was battling Graves disease, a rare thyroid disorder that causes weight fluctuation.

Regardless of the reason for her transformation, Elliott looks fit and extremely fabulous!

ABU receives digital board from intel

Intel-office

VENTURES AFRICA – American Semiconductor manufacturing company, Intel Corporation has donated digital Galileo boards to eight Nigerian universities as yet another move to demonstrate its commitment to promoting learning and innovation around the world.

The boards were recently presented to the eight institutions which were selected after a thorough application process. The winning universities included Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria; Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State; Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State; Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ekiti State.

Other benefitting universities were the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State and the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State.

At the handing-over event, Intel’s Corporate Affairs Group Director, Moise Adams Leye, revealed the rationale behind the move saying it was geared at motivating people to adopt more innovation and technology. “Intel is a powerful enabler of local innovation. Intel is donating 50, 000 Galileo board worldwide; we are working in 18 countries around the world including Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. Many schools around the world are already using the boards in embedded computing or micro-computer,” he said.

Describing the unique features of the digital boards, he added; “Galileo Board will enable students to embrace technology because the whole idea of it is to encourage learning and creating things that solves challenges. It is unique in that it allows the students to go from the simplest innovation to the more sophisticated things which is really the way to go.”

Also present at the event was a representative Professor Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). He lauded Intel for the donation while also congratulating the benefitting institutions.

“The National Universities Commission (NUC) is happy to be partnering with Intel and appreciate Intel for donating the boards to the Nigerian universities. We are convinced that the boards will encourage innovation because ideas and innovation are what move societies forward,” he said.

“While the NUC congratulates the beneficiary universities and enjoined other corporate bodies to emulate such gestures, we also hope that the boards will be put to excellent use so that Nigeria can also produce inventors like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and the likes in the near future,” he concluded.

Further news from the Intel Corporate Affairs Department suggests that other workshops with the universities will be executed as a sequel to the donation, the objective still being to inspire innovation.

Nigerian FEU student named outstanding international student in the Philippines

FEU PHOTO.

“I took up Nursing because I know I can be a better doctor because I understand the dynamics of both professions,” said Cynthia Oluchi Nworgu, Far Eastern University (FEU) nursing student, named one of the Three Outstanding International Students by Philippine International Friendship and Understanding Association, Inc. (PIFUA).
.

Nworgu, a senior student nurse, started her mark within the Institute of Nursing when she earned a “Student Achiever” honor in her sophomore year.

Just like any ‘international student’, Nworgu said she had a hard time expressing herself because of the language barrier between her and some professors. She hated having “special treatments” because she doesn’t want to learn the other way, but to learn the way regular students go through.

Despite the language difference, added Cynthia, “I still feel at home in FEU because the university has a nurturing environment. The Filipinos are very accommodating and are good listeners.“

Nworgu, who hails from Nigeria, showed resiliency and independence, earning her recommendations from her professors and their department. “Nworgu is hardworking, a fast learner, and active in class discussions, shared Leonardo P. de Guzman, section coordinator and adviser of Nworgu’s class. In fact, he added, during exposure in the clinical area, she would show compassion to clients, empathy and honesty in caring for her patients”.

These traits are what endeared her to Joeven Castro, FEU Student Development director. “I saw the potential in her and thought she can win the competition. You can sense her sincerity and the depth of her thoughts,” said Castro.

“I prayed first” said Nworgu when asked how she prepared for the competition. Apart from praying, Nworgu also studied everything about the Philippines by reading books and articles on history and current issues. She also received help from Castro in terms of speech presentation and interview strategies
.
Nworgu, who bested 12 other international students, admitted that during the competition, she was “over prepared”. For her talent showcase, she performed a traditional 5-minute Nigerian dance. The future doctor said she felt her extemporaneous speech on happiness helped her win.

Dr. Ma. Belinda G. Buenafe, Institute of Nursing Dean, expressed her happiness over Cynthia’s award. She thanked Nworgu for exemplifying the FEU core values fortitude excellence and uprightness in this competition.

PIFUA is an organization which seeks to introduce foreign students to every aspect of Filipino life and culture, as well as to expose Filipinos to the life and culture of foreign students. - FEU

2015: ABU professor joins presidential race

Voters casting their vote (3)

A professor of Business Education at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Mahmood Aliyu, has declared his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All

Progressives Congress (APC).
The presidential aspirant made the declaration at a press conference on Saturday in Minna.

Mr. Aliyu said his decision to vie for the presidency was informed by the agitation for the emergence of new crop of leaders “to fight the malaise in the country.

“There has been agitation for the emergence of new crop of leaders by well-meaning Nigerians in order to take this country out of problems.’’

The aspirant said APC was the only party that could tackle the current security challenges bedevilling the country.

He added that “an APC government will tackle the security issue with all the seriousness it requires and deserves’’.

Mr. Aliyu, however, called on the national leadership of the APC to review the N27 million fee for picking the party’s presidential nomination form.

He said, Our party should have a rethink about the fee for presidential nomination forms, so that ordinary Nigerians can afford it.

“Ordinary people who have something to offer get scared away by the amount; even the PDP fee is not up to that of our party.’’

He described as embarrassing, reports that he was being sponsored by the ruling PDP to run for president, arguing that he had always been in the opposition since he joined politics in 1993.

The presidential aspirant was born on Nov. 20, 1951 in Niger and he is an indigene of Offa in Kwara.

HOW TO HANDLE AN EXTRA YEAR/YEARS

1 – DO NOT PANIC (IT’S NOT THE END)  - The first thing a lot of people do when they get the news is to go berserk, please for heaven’s sake, take it easy , I understand that over here in Nigeria may be Africa, we are graded based on the paper, but the truth is YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY THE PAPER, your worth more than the paper , your more valuable than an academic degree , so please don’t let a course grade define your entire existence. I had a couple of friends who went into smoking and alcohol just because they taught that their future had come to an abrupt close.
"But Takashi u don’t get it, my parents will skin me, if they find out". OKAY, chill.  If you have parents who are super optimistic, you can give them the news, I know friends of mine also whose family’s supported them through 2-3 extra years, I mean the kids where the ones who wanted to quit not even the parents. But if you got my type of parents – AFRICAN, EDUCATED AND ACADEMIC DRIVEN, well I suggest two things,
1-Don’t tell em and raise your school fees yourself – may be through friends and relatives.
2 – Get a job during the holidays and raise your school fees, am sure by the time you’re done working to raise your own school fee for a year or two, you aint gonna get any more extra year, that i assure you.

2 – VERIFY YOUR RESULTS (& print them)
Don’t just accept board result placements hook line and sinker, did you write your exams properly? Are you affirmative you aced most questions? Don’t sit in your room crying and moaning, chin up, go to the exam officers and politely ask for course verification and result printout.
Ask for your scripts, because in case you don’t know, scripts are sometimes misplaced and sometimes unmarked – I’ve seen it happen people! Don’t sit there crying, crying don’t change nothing, buckle up , dress responsibly and walk to that office to get your results confirmed  and don’t let any lecturer scare you, remember be polite, in Africa , we respect the elderly so maintain the heritage but stand your ground POLITELY L.O.L.

3 – There’s a positive side to it (challenges are the breakfast of champions)
Have you noticed that 100 level (1st year) students who just got admission after school and those who stayed at home for a year or two think differently? The one's who stayed at home for a time will cherish their admission more than the one who had smooth sailing from the secondary school (high school), they tend to take lectures and assignment more seriously than those who didn’t. Why? you may ask, well they faced trying times before and overcame them.
You are or may just be facing yours for the 1st time, so it’s your time to overcome and not run. It is also a time for;

3a - REFLECTION; it's time to reflect dear brother/dear sister, what were your reading habits like , how seriously and urgently did you take assignments , tests and practical's , were you okay skipping lectures ,PLEASE BE HONEST WITH YOUR SELF.
Take a proper look at your study time be honest with yourself;

  • ·         Did you study as you ought to?

  • ·         Did you join study groups or attend tutorials?

  • ·         Did you ask for a friend or even a class colleague (that may not be your friend) for a help when you encountered difficulties during study or you rather stuck to your clicks, instead of seeking for knowledge?

  • ·         Did you go over past questions / and read them thoroughly?

  • ·         Did you teach anyone that which you knew? Anything that is taught is retained longer than that which is just learnt or assimilated.

  • ·         Did you follow the exam instructions properly?

  • Did you answer the question head on when you where suppose to discuss, or discussed when you were supposed to be direct, solve when you were supposed to derive, or derived when you were supposed to solve?

  • ·         How about your handwriting, is it legible ?– a 60 year old lecturer in spectacles won't have to the time or patience to mark an illegible script when he has 128 more to mark

"Hey Takashi don't tell me that, i read all through the semester and i still failed", all right, here are some small but very helpful tips

3a1 - SPEAK WELL OF YOUR SELF: e.g., "this course is an a Course", "i don't fail", "I am intelligent", "I understand math 102, chem. 512, physics 404" etc, the point is whatever you say will stand, your words are more important than 15hours of study, because the wrong words will in a single second can bring down an entire duration of study. USE YOUR WORDS WISELY.

3a2 - STUDY WITH OTHERS: i understand how important it is to sometimes study alone, but it is more important to study with someone who knows and understands that course better than you. Check it out , you could study thermodynamics for 12 hours alone and only understand 2 laws, but you could get someone with more understanding and the person will be able to communicate 6 - 7 laws to you within 3 -4 hours. And even answer a few exam questions with you.  So you see THE EFFECTIVENESS OF YOUR STUDY IS NOT IN THE DURATION (HOURS) BUT IN YOUR UNDERSTANDING, I'd rather read for 3 hrs and understand an 80 page course than read for 8 hrs and understand 15 pages out of that 80 page course. BE EFFECTIVE IN STUDY.... Read with those who know better than you at the moment.
That's why you should realize people are your opportunities; make friends with those who are more understanding than you at the moment. Drop every hate, dislike or prejudice to those of other tribes, ethnic groups, religion or race. Now you're in the university and a great deal of your success will matter in getting along with people from different backgrounds. BE HUMBLE ENOUGH TO
 LEARN FROM THEM...

3b - TO PLAN AHEAD;
You may have a semester a year or a year plus, and as I mentioned earlier it’s not time to blame or indulge in unhealthy lifestyles; pause and take a look at actions and possible choices you made that may have brought you to where you are now, and then take deliberate conscious steps to ensure that you deal with them now and for all time. This won’t work if you are not completely honest with yourself.
Remember, School is not the end, after you graduate there’s the exam of life, which will include marriage, parenting, modeling and lots more. Make up your mind that this extra year will push you to make yourself a better individual, son, daughter, future mom, dad, uncle and leader. Let the circumstance birth traits in you like patience, hard work, diligence, focus and discipline. Don’t create excuses for failure, chin up and prove to yourself that you’re better than your past.

3c - TO ADD VALUE TO YOURSELF;
Patience, Endurance, Humility, Hard work, Tolerance e.t.c and who says you can't start a business now, for those have a few courses, you could start a business right there and begin gaining some extra cash for yourself. Off course i wouldn't advice that if you have a bulk load of courses to deal with, for those with still a lot of credit loads to deal with , just focus on acing those courses.

4 – BE MATURE (TAKE RESPONSIBILITY)
Only kids blame. An adult that still blames situations, friends and systems for his or her problems, isn’t ready to face life’s challenges. I read a book that changed my life as teenager titled ‘TOUGH TIMES DON’T LAST BUT TOUGH PEOPLE DO’ BY ROBERT SCHULLER. It previewed the lives of individuals who went through terrible and sometimes gruesome situations of life but still made something beautiful out of their lives. My point; challenges are bound to come in your walk through life, some in their marriages, some in their health, some academics, some jobs etc, but you must make up your mind to take responsibility for where you are at the moment and make up your mind to make changes when and where necessary.

5 – KNOW WHEN TO MOVE OUT;
As much as this sounds like giving up, it’s not.
it’s always good to know when s**t hits the fan, let say you got admission into school in 2005, and it’s a five years course, and now it’s 2013, that’s a 3years extra.
Dear beloved, MOVE OUT!!!, Why spend 8 years in course that was supposed to be 5 years and still paying the same school fees again, when with that same school fees you could have gotten a clipper and start a mobile barbing saloon, purchased a mini generator / projector that could be rented weekly/daily, purchase a colour printer that prints for people e.t.c
What would then be the difference between you and the ordinary barber? It’s this, you are barber with a dream, a rental man/woman with a dream, a printer/photocopier with a dream with determination to go back to school and make a beautiful life with your dream.
Never ever give up, make up your mind to become who you’ve determined to be irrespective of the situation that face you. I say unto you, cheer up it's not over until you say it is. Remember, the only one with enough power to kill your dream is YOU!!

Yours truly

Although Tyler was thrilled to announce the big news to his friends during the bash, where Stevie Wonder was performing, he supposedly kept the mother’s identity a secret. Nigerian student sets African record in Microsoft contest

Microsoft Winner

Olubunmi Agusto of Day Waterman College, Abeokuta, Ogun State set a new record as the first African to emerge among the top three in the Certiport Worldwide competition on Microsoft Office.

The competition, held recently in Anaheim, California , United States of America (USA), involved participants from different countries who were tested on their proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel.

The annual contest, which began 13 years ago, has never produced an African among the top three winners. In the past, participants from Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon , Uganda and Ghana participated on the world stage but they never got close to the trophy. The championship started with a pool of 400,000 participants around the world who took Microsoft Office Specialist certification.

After competing at the national level, Olubunmi and Adonijah Airede of Regent School, Abuja, made it to the global stage to contest with other 123 finalists in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The finalists in Microsoft Word took a timed exam in which they had to recreate a Word document by following instructions. They were scored on accuracy and speed.

Olubunmi, 15, clinched the second position in the championships, behind the winner, Dominique Howard of United States of America, while Hannah Wilson of the United Kingdom won the third place prize.

In one timed challenge, contestants were presented with a Word document with an image of Saturn and other elements such as text boxes and tables. They were asked to the recreate the document with the same specifications, such as the same margins and horizontal and vertical height of each object. Contestants were tested in Microsoft Office Word 2007 and 2010.

The competition is an annual event. Already entries are being accepted for the 2015 competition which will start in November 2014 and last over a period of six months. The competition organized by Readmanna in Nigeria, will test Word, Excel, PowerPoint 2010 and 2013. The competition is open to all students aged between 13 and 22 years old.

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, as part its social responsibility initiatives, hunts for talented Nigerians that would compete on the global stage. The bank sponsors an ICT competition for secondary and tertiary institution students in the country, organized by Readmanna Ventures Limited.

The competition starts at the school level where different students compete. Winners later compete at the inter-school and state competitions. Two winners that emerge from the finals are then sponsored to participate in the Certiport Worldwide competition on Microsoft Office. The competition is open to all secondary school and university students in the country, who are able to show proof of enrolment at an academic institution.

31 Students Arrested Over Cultism In Ogun

About 31 suspected cultists from various tertiary institutions in Ogun State were arrested during an initiation ceremony at a hotel in Abeokuta, the state capital.

It was gathered that most of the students came from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNNAB), Federal College of Education Osiele, and the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY).

A female suspect, Itunun Abiola, who claimed to be a student of the polytechnic, however, told journalists that she was on her way to meet a cousin when she was arrested.

Another suspect, Oluwatobi Asekan, who identified himself as a 500-level student of Agric-Economics in FUNNAB, confessed that he secured the hotel for the other suspects but added that he was not aware of the purpose for which it was booked.

The police displayed a banner with the inscription: “National Association of Airlords, FUNNAB chapter and OAK nest, Determination Regime,” while T shirts with Eiye confraternity inscriptions and other paraphernalia were also recovered.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, said the suspects were arrested following an intelligence report. He added that investigation into the matter is on-going.

2015: ABU Profs Drum Support For El-Rufai

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, a coalition of Professors from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have perfected plans to embark on aggressive department to department and Faculty to faculty campaign to drum up support for former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Nasir El-Rufia as he prepares to officially declare for the Governorship election of Kaduna State.

The Professors under the platform of Kaduna State Good Governance Project, according to their coordinator, Professor Adamu Ahmed have vowed to use their intellectual resources to support El-Rufai to take-over the State’s mantle of leadership, giving his unparalleled and tremendous experience, vision, bravery, precision and serene patriotism.

Professor Ahmed opined that Kaduna State is too strategic and important to the North in particular and the country in general, to be administered by a politician who is deficient in experience, political will and ability to take bold decisions needed to move the State to greater heights.

He said the State, being the melting pot of Northern politics and administration and which had historically been one of the key deciding factors in producing Nigeria’s president in any free contest, is too critical to be left in the hands of mediocre who do not have clarity of vision, defined programme of action and the intellectual capacity to turn the State into a modern capital and befitting city with all the road networks and other modern infrastructural facilities, required of a historical and leading state such as Kaduna.

The Professor of Urban and Regional Planning who regretted that Kaduna State which is supposed to have since overtaken other States in the country in terms of infrastructural, economic and structural cum and physical developments considering its strategic nature and dense population, has become the most crowded State in the country in which life is gradually becoming too boring and difficult for its residents to cope with, due to lack of proper town planning.

He attributed all this backwardness to the failure of the electorates in the State to, in the past, vote people or leaders on the basis of competence, ability to deliver, track record of achievements and patriotism, but rather they voted most previous governors on the basis of stomach infrastructure.

The coordinator therefore called on politicians and all discerning and patriotic indigenes of Kaduna State to join hands with the members of the Kaduna State Good Governance Project to rescue the State from its present pathetic state of backwardness and insecurity.

Nigeria: Fight Against Exam Malpractice Goes Digital At Maiduguri University

The University of Maiduguri has introduced an electronic centre for the writing of examinations (e-centre for e-exams) with a view to ridding the institution of the menace of examination malpractices.

Since the introduction of e-exams in 2010, rate of examination malpractices among students has reduced as the e-centre proved to be an effective anti-examination malpractice measure.

Many faculties and departments have keyed into the development with the faculty of education and the general studies, among others, taking all their examinations at the e-centre.

However, inadequate knowledge of the functions of the computer programmes, fear on the part of students and the tension of seeing one's scores instantly are some of the reasons why students feel nervous about the innovation.

Some first time users complain of not being knowledgeable enough to use the e-centre, mainly because of their lack of sufficient computer knowledge.

The interesting thing about the centre is the elimination of examination malpractice as most students cannot copy what their neighbours are doing because the questions differ.

The questions are mostly objective and randomly selected for each student, making smuggling of 'micro-chips' into the centre a waste of time.

Thus, it appears like as students are going digital with examination malpractices, University of Maiduguri is also going digital with the fight against the objectionable practice.
