Shooting incident at Anambra N.Y.S.C Camp




Youth Corps members undergoing orientation at the National Youth Service Corps’ Orientation Camp, Umunya in Anambra State had a sleepless night yesterday following the shooting of one of their colleagues when he reportedly went out of the dormitories to urinate.

The incident, TELL gathered, happened at around 7.30 pm. The shot Corp member whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, however escaped death by the whiskers as the bullet hit him on the arm.

 A reliable source hinted the magazine that the injured Corper who was bleeding profusely was immediately rushed to a hospital in Awka, the state capital, in an ambulance.
A youth Corper told the magazine that following the incident, other NYSC corp members at the camp were afraid to sleep in the hostels and so gathered on the field till around 1 a.m when the authorities succeeded in persuading them to go in and sleep.

TELL learnt that security at the camp had been porous as the place had previously been invaded by hoodlums who come in to dispossess the corpers of their money and other personal effects.

 The magazine gathered that as a result of the shooting incident, security has been beefed up with several soldiers drafted to the orientation camp.

Kingsley Azugo, the medical doctor who attended to the Delta born corps member said his condition was stable. “They came in around 10 p.m. and the patient was heading into coma because of the enormous loss of blood before he was revived. “The injury was at the right bicep of the muscle, that is the bullet entrance, but the exit was at the media bicep measuring about eight centimetres’’, he said.
